British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will visit the US next week for a meeting with President Donald Trump. A British government spokesperson said they would discuss “a wide range of issues”.
It will be the first personal meeting between the leaders since Trump returned to the White House. The president is said to have recently surprised the centre-left British Prime Minister with a phone call.
The Guardian newspaper wrote last week that Trump called while Starmer met with Mark Burnett, Trump’s special envoy to the United Kingdom. An insider spoke of a spontaneous and unexpected phone call.
Meeting
According to the newspaper, Trump knew that a meeting was taking place. The American embassy confirmed that the president called his envoy and then gave his phone to Starmer.
Trump later reflected on the conversation. “He asked for a meeting, and I agreed to that,” he told the press about Starmer. We are planning a friendly meeting. It’s very good.”
