The EU Objects to Travel Bans Germany and Belgium

The Spanish government plans to keep the border closed until July for fear of more contagion and a second wave of the coronavirus.

In mid-March, the government declared a state of emergency and closed its borders. The economy almost came to a standstill and shut down the major tourism sector.

The lockdown in Spain has eased in much of the country since Monday. However, Madrid would not yet dare to open the border and only want to do so for people from the Schengen countries in July.

Currently, scarce foreign visitors have to be quarantined for two weeks.

That obligation will expire just like the current state of emergency on May 24. But Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government can ask in parliament once again to extend those two weeks.

In Spain, 27,000 people have died from lung disease that causes the coronavirus. That is about 10 percent of the number of corona cases identified.

In the past 24 hours, 184 patients died, slightly more than the day before. More than 180,000 patients have now been cured.
