Czech Prime Minister Babis: Belarus Elections Must be Over

The presidential elections in Belarus must be repeated with the presence of foreign observers, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis said Friday.

He thereby joins Polish calls to EU leaders to discuss the situation.

“I have spoken with the Polish Prime Minister (Mateusz Morawiecki), and we are calling (EU Council President Charles Michel) for an urgent video meeting with the members of the European Council,” Babis said on Twitter.

“The elections in Belarus must be repeated, must be transparent and with the presence of foreign observers,” he stressed.

The foreign ministers of the EU countries will meet on Friday afternoon via an informal video conference about the controversial elections in Belarus.

They are considering new sanctions against the regime of President Lukashenko, whose security forces crackdown on protests against his re-election.
