The EU Objects to Travel Bans Germany and Belgium

The European Commission wants Germany, Belgium and other EU countries to revoke their travel bans. Such severe measures are not appropriate, the committee believes. She complained by letter.

Germany has ten days to respond and reports the German news agency DPA, which has the letter to Germany. This period also applies to Belgium, Hungary, Denmark, Sweden and Finland.

“We believe that the rightly pursued goal – the protection of public health during a pandemic – can be achieved with less restrictive measures,” the committee writes.

Belgium has banned all unnecessary travel to and from Belgium. Germany hardly allows anyone from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Tyrol any longer because dangerous new variants of the coronavirus are spreading there. Berlin makes an exception for truck drivers, for example.

The Belgian authorities will consider revoking the travel ban on Friday.
