British Prime Minister Wants Investigation into Police Crackdown During Vigil

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson wants an investigation into the police action during the vigil that took place in London last weekend.

Johnson says he is “very concerned” about the images he has seen. The police chief has already said he will not resign because of the commotion.

The vigil was organized in London last weekend in memory of the murdered British Sarah Everard (33). The authorities had banned that memorial or protest rally because of the corona measures, but thousands of people were still moving.

The police, therefore, decided to intervene and arrested several demonstrators. Images show how several women were brutally pushed to the ground by officers. Thus, the police angered many people because the women drew attention to sexual harassment and assault on the street.

“Like anyone who has seen it, I am very concerned about the images of Clapham Common on Saturday night,” said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, referring to the South London park where the vigil took place. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan previously called the scenes ‘unacceptable’.

Johnson promises an investigation into the police crackdown. The British Prime Minister also says that he will meet with an exceptional team of officials to discuss violence against women. Police chief Cressida Dick has already informed the BBC that she will not resign because of the commotion.
