Hundreds of People Flee From the Erupted Volcano in Java

Thousands of people have to leave the vicinity of a volcano on the Indonesian island of Lembata.

The authorities say they have received about 3,000 people in government buildings. The volcano Lewotolo has been erupting for three days.

On Sunday, the Lewotolo ash spewed up to 4 kilometres into the air. The airport on Lembata, an island almost 1000 kilometres east of Java, has been closed.

The volcano in the north of the island is more than 1400 meters high. The last major eruption was in 2012. Indonesia has almost 130 active volcanoes.
