American Minister Mike Pompeo Visits Suriname

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Suriname on Thursday.

Albert Ramdin, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation in Suriname, confirmed this to the ANP on Sunday.

It is the first time that a US Secretary of State has visited Suriname.

Pompeo’s visit to Suriname is part of a multi-day trip. He will also visit neighbouring Guyana. The fact that America has Suriname on the retina was also evident last June.

During a press conference, Pompeo said he expected “transparent and credible” elections in Suriname.

Ramdin sees his colleague’s promised to visit as a sign of the American government’s confidence in the new administration of President Chan Santokhi and Vice President Ronnie Brunswick.

The visit will contribute to strengthening the relationship between the two countries, Ramdin expects.
